The old Apron Control Tower has been given a long-overdue makeover, and it’s now a unique reception area with panoramic views over the airfield.
The room can easily accommodate 15-20 people and enjoys unique status as the only airport facility of its kind to offers apron airside views via direct landside access. However, unlike the re-opened and hugely popular Viewing Gallery, the Apron Control Tower will be restricted to private airport-related functions.
Airport Managing Director, Graham Keddie, said: “I think it’s appropriate that our new ‘super’ Council should be the first to see this revamped and refurbished facility.
“When I first saw it nine months ago, I couldn’t believe that such an amazing space was lying idle. It’s a bit of a climb up a few flights of stairs to get to the tower, but it’s well worth the effort. It takes in our entire range of activities, from private charter operations to freight and domestic and international airline activity.
“Guests can watch aircraft arriving and departing on our main runway, and all the apron work that’s involved in making it a smooth operation. The transformation is a great success and I have no doubt that it will prove hugely popular.”
The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Thomas Hogg, gave the new facility the thumbs up during the Council visit.
Cllr Hogg said: “I would like to congratulate the management and staff at Belfast International Airport for the massive contribution they continue to make to our local economy in terms of growing employment and attracting visitors and tourists. This new facility is yet another example of innovation and service excellence at Belfast International Airport and on behalf of the Council I am looking forward to working closely with Graham Keddie and his team going forward.”
