The Green and White Army is on the march….and they’re heading our way to get to Euro 2016 in France next month.
With just under a month to go until the first Northern Ireland match plans are underway to decorate the terminal so when the thousands of fans turn up at Check-in, they’ll see an airport bedecked in the green and white in support of Northern Ireland.
Thirteen charters from seven different airlines will transport the fans on the 12th, 16th and 21st to Nice, Lyon and Paris. An impressive array of aircraft types will be on the apron, from the A330, which can carry close to 400 passengers, to the much smaller 98-seater City Jet aircraft.
It’s estimated at about 150,000 fans who support both Irish teams will descend on their French match cities. In addition to the 2500 who will fly on charters out of the International, it’s expected that thousands more will make their way on scheduled services.
In addition, an airside Fan Zone will be created with giant tv screens to ensure fans don’t miss a second of the action. Airport Business Development Director, Uel Hoey, says the idea is to create a big party atmosphere throughout the Terminal.
Uel adds: “We’ll put out the welcome mat to give the fans a big send-off to Euro ’16. This is the biggest football competition Northern Ireland has been involved in for more than thirty years, and we want to do our bit to support the effort.
“Northern Ireland fans are amongst the best in the world and we want them to know that we will leave no stone unturned as they head off on this great quest for glory.
“It will be a busy few days for us here, but we are more than up for the challenge as, I’m sure, Northern Ireland will be whenever they meet Poland, the Ukraine and Germany.
“The Fan Zone will be a big draw not only for fans lucky enough to secure tickets, but the thousands of other fans who will pass through the airport whenever Northern Ireland is on the pitch. We’ll be ready to help make the occasion a memorable one for a fan base that has few equals anywhere in the world.”
