Belfast International Airport - Charity of the Quarter Apr-June
This quarter’s Charity of the Quarter is Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI (LLNI). Nominated by our Operations and Security Manager, Rod Haskins, the charity is the only one in Northern Ireland which funds research into the causes and cures of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Rod came to know of the charity as a former colleague, lost his son, John ‘Beanzy’ Hynes to leukaemia some years ago and he and his family continue to raise funds to support it. Rod, who thought he would play his part to help, was delighted when he found out his nomination was selected.
John’s sister Leanne began fundraising back in July 2016 and to date has raised over £8,000. Leanne’s most recent effort was to complete the London Marathon and she and a team of friends plan to run the Lisburn Half Marathon in June.
In support of the charity, Rod has activities planned in the airport and has enlisted the help of his colleagues and friends.
“The first activity I’m planning is a ‘BFS Book Box’. Boxes have been placed throughout our offices to collect the books and I’m encouraging everyone to donate books and buy some new ones. If they’re feeling really generous they can donate again and buy as often as they wish!” said Rod.
The airport will add to the money raised a donation of one day’s takings each month from the Drop-Off Zone.
The money raised will help LLNI to fight blood cancers. Everyday 1 in 3 people in NI are diagnosed with a blood cancer. All funds raised by the charity remain in Northern Ireland. More information can be found here.
